February 6: Bible Study: Justice Transforms Community – Matthew 20:1-16. Matthew is the only Gospel writer to include the parable of the laborers in the vineyard, suggesting that it had particular significance for him and also for us. Written some 10 years after the destruction of Jerusalem, he addresses a situation in which followers of Jesus were living in a world where Roman power had been newly asserted. Despite the devastation of the city and Temple, Matthew reassures his community that God is still faithful to them, that God has not abandoned them. He reorients us towards God’s reign, and the kingdom of heaven here on earth. Bob Hoyt will lead us in this session of the Transformed Community: Freed and Empowered for Radical Welcome Bible study series focusing on the nature and character of Christian community and how it can change the world. Throughout these sessions, we’ll continue to explore how our church community challenges and sustains us in the work of living with radical generosity, inclusion, compassion, justice, and forgiveness.
